It’s linked to heart disease and the resulting tooth loss decreases the quality of life, quality of the diet and nutrient intake. German scientists found that people with lower blood levels of vitamin D had a greater risk of gum disease.

Women in the study also consumed nearly 50 percent less calcium than recommended. Vitamin D deficiency is common in many women.

Increase vitamin D levels by eating plenty of leafy green vegetables, vitamin D-fortified foods and supplements. Sun exposure also increases vitamin D levels. Some experts currently advise 15 minutes of sun exposure prior to applying sunscreen. Lean people had a lower risk of gum disease. Exercising and eating a well-balanced diet containing plenty of vitamin C and calcium can help prevent gum disease.
